Thank you At 3 years old our son underwent a major surgery in hope that he would walk. Six months on and he was still unable to stand independently, even in the orthotics he was wearing, we were feeling deflated. Many physios had mentioned to us LOC and encouraged us to meet Sam. This was one of the best decisions we have ever made for our son. Within days of Sam producing new AFO’s and custom shoes my son was taking his first steps alone. The standard of orthotics produced were clearly above anything we had before, both via NHS routes or other orthotics providers we used. We were blown away! As a parent there is nothing more you can want than the best for your children. We have been on a long journey in the short 6 years of his life, met many professionals and tried many things. There are but a few that have made the world of difference and by far I can say that LOC has. The level of understanding of our sons condition and abilities, together with advanced technology, has come together to fine tune a pair of AFOs and shoes that have given him the optimum level of support and balance to enable the progression we wish for. Sam and his wonderful team, including Beverly and Magda, have been beyond kind, friendly and patient with us and having seen the interactions with other families whilst waiting for our appointments I can see this is not an experience exclusive to us. Thank you to you all, we are so grateful to you for giving the gift of walking to our son, for us as parents it’s what we could only wish for.

I really can’t express how grateful I am to Prof Forghany and the team at the London orthotic consultancy based at Salford University. I only wish I had known about the LOC years ago when I first started using an AFO. It could have made a significant difference to my mobility much earlier. From my very first assessment, I was extremely impressed by how thorough and professional the whole session with the Professor was. He took the time to properly understand my difficulties rather than simply looking at the AFO I was wearing and accepting that it was suitable. Prof Forghany explained in detail what was happening with my gait and, importantly, how my existing AFO was affecting the way I walked. He was able to identify problems that I hadn't previously understood and explained them to me in a way that was easy to understand. What gave me the most confidence was that I felt they were looking at the whole picture rather than simply trying to provide me with another piece of equipment. They were interested in how my leg was functioning, how I was walking, the difficulties I was experiencing and how an AFO and bespoke footwear could be designed or adjusted to work with my individual needs. The initial assessment was incredibly thorough, and I came away feeling that, for the first time in a long while, someone really understood the problems I was having with my mobility. The knowledge, expertise and attention to detail shown by Prof Forghany and his team have been exceptional. I genuinely believe that finding the LOC has given me a better understanding of my gait and how the right orthotic support can make such an important difference. If, like me, you have been using an AFO for years and feel that it isn't quite right, or that your walking could be improved, I would strongly recommend speaking to the team at the LOC. My only regret is that I didn't discover them sooner. With many thanks. W. Craig.

Amazing service from start to finish, I made a Consultation online. Had a video call within 48 hours and explained my son has plagiocaphaly and spoke about my anxieties, was taken seriously and invited to LOC in Kingston for a face to face appointment. Receptionist was so friendly and welcoming! Saw mr Saaed Hamid who was brilliant, took measurements and luckily told me my son didn’t need any treatment- didn’t push anything just facts, even took a scan to confirm and put my mind at ease. All round a brilliant service can’t fault them at all. Really recommend!

Thank you so much to Professor Saeed Forghany at the Manchester clinic for the wonderful AFOs and orthotics that my daughter needs to help her to learn to walk again. With Professor Forghany's help and advice, my daughter is getting stronger with each visit to the clinic and the on-site gait analysis and instant gait analysis feedback is a game changer for us.

I have been working with Sam at LOC, before LOC existed. My last pair of AFOs lasted me 10 years and survived many travels including a walking holiday to New Zealand. Only cannot fault the service and the staff, and I was very grateful to be invited to speak at their anniversary dinner (I was essentially the comedic warm up act.) I am currently transitioning to a new pair of splints and once again, I’m sure they will last!

Types of scoliosis treatment

Bracing is one part of scoliosis care, usually alongside a spinal consultant and, where appropriate, physiotherapy.

Scoliosis treatment depends on a few factors, such as:

  • your age
  • how much growing is still to come (based on your clinical reports where available)
  • the severity of your curve

And combines one or more of the following:

  • observation (the “watch and wait” approach)
  • a bespoke scoliosis brace
  • a bespoke exercise and physical therapy programme
  • surgery

Benefits of scoliosis bracing

A well-designed, properly fitted bespoke brace can help manage scoliosis during growth. The main aim is to support curve management and, for suitable patients, help reduce the risk of progression when worn as prescribed and monitored as part of a wider care pathway.

Scoliosis braces can:

  • correct or reduce the curve in-brace
  • manage symptoms
  • manage pain
  • improve the visual appearance of scoliosis
  • correct both simple and complex curves
  • improve posture
Patient success story

Matilde's scoliosis bracing experience

Matilde travelled to us from Chile for bracing treatment. Because of her age and her skeletal maturity, the risk of her scoliosis curve progressing (i.e. getting worse) was high.

Her father, Felipe says “Given the limited ambitions of the bracing treatment available in Chile, we started research focused on finding the best available brace technology… We booked a video appointment with Senior Orthotist Anna Courtney where she explained to us the characteristics and benefits of LOC’s corrective scoliosis brace. After the remote consultation, we took the decision instantly and arranged to travel to London for a face-to-face assessment and fitting of the LOC Scoliosis Brace.”

After just over a year of wearing the brace, Matilde’s before and after X-rays showed her Cobb angle reduced from 29 degrees to 14 degrees. Individual results vary, and imaging interpretation is provided by the medical team.

Kyphosis treatment

Kyphosis is when the top of the spine curves forward and makes the back look more rounded than usual.

Bracing helps relieve pain from kyphosis by adjusting shoulder and pelvis alignment. In growing patients, it may help reduce the risk of the condition getting worse and can improve the visual appearance of the condition.

The LOC Scoliosis Brace

A lightweight, custom 3D scoliosis brace designed to optimise in-brace correction
  • Measurable in-brace correction

In our published cohort, the LOC Scoliosis Brace achieved an average in-brace correction of 78% when worn as prescribed. In-brace correction is an immediate, ‘in the brace’ measurement, and it does not guarantee long-term curve change. Results vary depending on factors such as curve type, growth stage and wear time.

  • Advanced 3D design

The brace’s bold design enables advanced three-dimensional curve management for both single and complex double scoliosis curves. In selected cases, the brace is designed to achieve overcorrection in-brace, where clinically appropriate and carefully monitored by our orthotic team.

  • Lightweight and low-profile

Designed to be slim and lightweight, with a low-profile fit that can be easier to manage day to day. We’ve also added straps to the front of the brace so patients can put it on and take it off by themselves.

  • Backed by clinical research

The brace has been fine-tuned based on feedback from our scoliosis patients and spinal consultants. It has been presented internationally and is supported by our published research for its bracing outcomes. Our published data also demonstrates measurable 3D correction, confirming that the brace influences coronal, sagittal, and rotational alignment.

  • 3D curve management you can measure

We may use low-dose EOS imaging arranged with an independent imaging provider to review in-brace positioning and support orthotic adjustment. Imaging is performed by the external provider, and we use the images and any measurements provided to inform brace fit, comfort and orthotic management. We do not provide radiology or diagnostic imaging reports.

Our clinics offering scoliosis treatment

We offer scoliosis consultation, brace fittings and ongoing care at:

Scoliosis bracing for children: early treatment benefits

Early intervention can help manage scoliosis during growth and may reduce the risk of progression for some children. We offer specific orthotic treatment protocols for children under 10 who have been diagnosed with early onset scoliosis.

For children with mild curves (10 to 20 degrees), Schroth-based specialist therapy may help correct or manage the curve. If the curve is above 20 degrees, we usually recommend a combination of therapy and bracing.

Bracing for teenagers with scoliosis during growth

In adolescence, scoliosis curves can progress quickly and unpredictably while the skeleton is still growing and during hormonal changes. Starting 3D bracing early can support three-dimensional in-brace correction and may help reduce the risk of progression during growth.

For teens with scoliosis curves over 20 degrees, we recommend the LOC Scoliosis Brace combined with a tailored Schroth therapy program.

Close monitoring during puberty is essential, especially during growth spurts, to track any progression of the curve.

Delayed scoliosis surgery brace

Your or your child’s spinal surgery may be delayed or canceled for various reasons. Our scoliosis brace can help by supporting posture and comfort, and may help reduce the risk of progression while you wait for surgery (with medical oversight).

If clinical needs demand, we can also manufacture bespoke braces rapidly at our Kingston upon Thames clinic through our same-day scoliosis brace service. If you need same-day bracing, please contact us and our admin team will arrange this for you.

Scoliosis treatment for adults: pain relief and support

Exercises and training to improve posture are typically the first treatment recommended for adults with scoliosis. We brace adults depending on their needs. Whether that’s to reduce pain, improve posture or lessen the visual appearance of scoliosis.

Since the spine has matured and is less flexible, bracing won’t typically reverse the curve but can:

  • relieve pain, reducing the need for medication
  • improve posture
  • help manage symptoms and support comfort (outcomes vary)
  • improve the visual appearance of the spinal curve

Bracing can be helpful if you have severe scoliosis and want additional support alongside your medical care, including when you are exploring surgical and non-surgical options.
