When Tommy was born, everything looked just as it should including the shape of his head. But by the time he was two months old, his mum Kelly began to notice something wasn’t quite right.
“I noticed the left-hand side of his head looked a bit flat,” she explains. “Our GP advised repositioning and lots of tummy time, but the flatness didn’t improve. I had this constant niggle in the back of my mind it just didn’t feel like it was going to correct itself.”
While continuing to monitor Tommy’s head shape, Kelly began exploring other options. She found LOC online and saw an Instagram post from reality TV personality Chloe Lewis, whose baby had also been treated for plagiocephaly with a helmet at LOC.
At the same time, a routine check-up raised a concern that Tommy’s fontanelle might have closed too early. Thankfully, a paediatric referral confirmed everything was fine. That reassurance gave Kelly the confidence to return to LOC and consider helmet therapy
Tommy was seen by Saeed Hamid, an experienced orthotist at our Bristol clinic. Kelly says that first appointment made all the difference.
“As a first-time mum, it’s hard to know if you’re just worrying. But Saeed showed me clear measurements proving Tommy did have plagiocephaly. I felt so reassured. There was no pressure just information and support to help us make the right decision.”
In April 2021, Tommy began helmet therapy with the LOCband Lite, a lighter, more breathable, 3D printed version of our original LOCband.
“He got on with it really well right from the start,” says Kelly. “He slept in it happily, and it didn’t seem to bother him at all. Even though we started quite late he was eight months old you could see a difference within four weeks.”
Tommy’s head measurements showed real improvement:
“Even just looking at him, you can see the change,” Kelly adds. “It may not seem like a big deal to some, but I kept thinking; what if he wanted a buzzcut later in life? His head shape would have looked so unusual. I just wanted him to grow up feeling confident.”
For Kelly, the experience was overwhelmingly positive and she now encourages other parents with similar concerns to act quickly.
“We were lucky, but LOC advises starting between four and seven months for the best results. The team never pushed us they just gave us the facts. I felt genuinely supported.”
She also appreciated the wider trust in LOC’s clinical standards:
“Knowing they work with hospitals like Great Ormond Street gave me extra reassurance. From the start, Saeed clearly wanted to help and he really did.”
