Scoliosis is often thought of as a condition that affects children and teenagers, but many adults experience it too. In adulthood, scoliosis can take different forms. Two common curve patterns are S-shaped (double curve) and C-shaped (single curve) scoliosis.

Adult scoliosis: types and how it can affect you

Adult scoliosis involves a sideways curve of the spine. It may develop during growth (idiopathic scoliosis) or later in life due to age-related changes in the spine (degenerative scoliosis). The curve can vary in shape and severity:

  • S-shaped scoliosis (double major): two curves in opposite directions, usually in the thoracic and lumbar spine
  • C-shaped scoliosis: features a single, continuous curve and is often associated with degenerative changes in late life.

Both types of scoliosis may lead to:

  • visible changes in posture, such as uneven shoulders, hips or waist
  • discomfort or chronic back pain
  • reduced flexibility or mobility

How we treat adult scoliosis at LOC

We offer a specialist non-surgical orthotics-led care pathway for teenagers and adults. If you have a diagnosis and any imaging reports or measurements from your clinical team, we can use these to inform orthotic brace design, fit and adjustment, alongside your wider medical care pathway.

Our approach includes:

  • custom scoliosis bracing: such as the LOC Scoliosis Brace, designed using 3D scanning and CAD/CAM technology for a personalised and discreet fit.
  • postural exercise therapy: Structured exercises to target muscle imbalances, improve core strength and support spinal correction.
  • monitoring and support: follow-ups to track progress and adapt your treatment as needed.

Our scoliosis bracing treatment involves a custom-made brace, designed using 3D scanning and CAD/CAM technology to realign the spine as effectively and discreetly as possible.

Many adult patients report:

  • significant improvements in pain
  • better posture

Physiotherapy and postural rehabilitation

We work in partnership with SOS to offer exercise programs tailored to adult scoliosis. These support muscle rebalancing and enhance brace outcomes.

Follow-up and progress review

Patients wearing a The LOC Scoliosis Brace are offered regular reviews and repeat 3D surface scans to support brace fit, comfort and wearability over time. We may also review any updated measurements provided by your medical team to help guide orthotic adjustments. We do not provide radiology or diagnostic imaging reports.

Real patient stories at LOC

Over the years, we’ve supported many adults with scoliosis, including idiopathic and degenerative cases. Here are two examples:

Sinead’s story: adult idiopathic scoliosis

Sinead wore a custom Chêneau–Gensingen style brace as part of her care plan. She reported improvements in day-to-day comfort and posture over the first few months.

Degenerative scoliosis in adulthood

Another patient chose LOC Scoliosis Bracing as part of their non-surgical care plan and reported improvements in comfort and functional posture The brace not only relieved pain but also improved functional posture, helping restore quality of life.

A lightweight, custom 3D scoliosis brace designed to optimise in-brace correction

A bespoke brace can help reduce the risk of progression during growth and support curve management as part of a wider care plan. Our brace works by gently guiding your spine into a more corrective in-brace position, with follow-up and adjustments to support fit and comfort.

“LOC has been fantastic, friendly, understanding. Anna did not pull any punches about the wearing regime and gave us all the information we needed. Polly was in her brace for less than two years. LOC has provided a really incredible service.”
