“I am absolutely thrilled with his results, and Catherine has been amazing every time we have visited the clinic. It’s so reassuring that we can call if we have any questions, and video appointments are always an option.”
Laura, Jake's mum
Jake’s family first became concerned about scoliosis after his sister was diagnosed. They began to notice that one of Jake’s hips sat slightly higher than the other, and that he had a small curve at the top of his back.
An X-ray confirmed a 45-degree curve, which came as a shock to the family.
Jake and his family were incredibly upset and worried when they found out how severe the curve was. At 15 and just over six feet tall, Jake knew there was very little time left for his curve to be corrected before he stopped growing.
The specialist referred Jake to LOC for non-surgical orthotic treatment. He had an orthotic consultation with Clinical Lead Anna Courtney and was assessed for a brace. As we assess, design, manufacture and fit our LOC Scoliosis Braces in-house, Jake was assessed in the morning, and his brace was made the same day. He returned that afternoon for his fitting with orthotist Catherine Hendy.
From the start, Jake was committed to treatment. He wore his brace as recommended by LOC and followed the exercises provided through Scoliosis SOS physiotherapy.
After wearing his brace for 10 months, Jake returned to his scoliosis specialist in early 2026 for an out-of-brace X-ray, which showed that his scoliosis had improved from 45 degrees to 34 degrees.
Laura shared: “Because Jake was at Risser 4 at the start of treatment, we didn’t imagine it would improve. We thought it would just stop it progressing, but we never expected it to actually reduce the curve.”
Laura also shared that the LOC Scoliosis Brace was much lighter and less bulky than her daughter’s brace from another provider.
Alongside wearing his brace, Jake started swimming to strengthen his core and continued with his Scoliosis SOS exercises.
Jake is grateful to LOC for exceeding his expectations and helping him achieve such a positive result. He hopes his story gives hope to other teenagers with scoliosis. He also wanted to highlight that many articles online focus on girls with scoliosis, while information about teenage boys with scoliosis can be harder to find.
Reflecting on their overall experience, Laura said: “Our experience at LOC has been amazing and professional. Everyone has been so positive, encouraging and lovely. I’ve already recommended LOC to a friend whose daughter was recently diagnosed with scoliosis.”
