Repositioning strategies

Until about 4 to 5 months of age, repositioning combined with tummy time can be enough to promote a more even head shape. The goal is to encourage your baby to avoid resting on the flattened area, allowing their head shape to correct naturally as they grow.

Sleeping position

  • Alternate head position at night by placing your baby at opposite ends of the cot so they naturally turn their head in different directions.
  • Turn your baby’s head away from the flattened side when putting them down to sleep.
  • Always follow NHS safe sleep guidelines babies should sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of cot death, or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Tummy time

Tummy time is essential for strengthening the neck and trunk muscles, which helps prevent further flattening and encourages overall motor development.

How to encourage tummy time

  • Start gradually: Many babies dislike tummy time at first because they lack the strength to hold their heads up. Increase the time slowly to help them adjust.
  • Use a support: Placing a rolled towel or cushion under their chest can make tummy time easier. Once they gain strength, remove the support to challenge them further.
  • Make it fun:
    • Lie on your back and place your baby on your chest to encourage eye contact and comfort.
    • Use toys, mirrors, and sounds to engage them.
    • Play alongside them on the floor for encouragement.

See our tummy time guide for more tips.

Head position during daily activities

Your baby’s head position is influenced by carrying, feeding, and playtime habits.

  • Switch sides during feeding (breast or bottle).
  • Alternate the side you hold them when carrying.
  • Change the direction of their gaze by encouraging them to look both ways.
  • Tummy-down carrying (carrying your baby facing downward) can strengthen neck and trunk muscles.

Minimising time in travel systems

Modern baby travel systems (car seats, bouncers, swings) allow for seamless transport, but they also mean extended periods of lying on the back against a firm surface.

Tips to reduce pressure

  • Only keep your baby in car seats or bouncers when necessary.
  • Give your baby regular breaks from prolonged back positioning.
  • Use baby carriers or hold your baby upright when possible.

Repositioning and tummy time are simple, effective ways to help improve your baby’s head shape. By making small changes to daily routines, sleep habits, and carrying techniques, you can support natural rounding while also helping your baby’s motor development.

If you do not notice any improvement, or you’re worried at any point, speak to your GP or health visitor. You can also book a consultation with one of our orthotists to discuss next steps.

How the LOCband Lite can help with plagiocephaly treatment

Backed by clinical research, LOCband Lite is a non-invasive cranial remoulding helmet designed to support a more balanced head shape over time. Results vary depending on age, severity and daily wear time.

“From the very start, everyone at the London Orthotic Consultancy was professional and friendly. Every step of the way was well-explained and the fitting was quick. It only took Magnus one day to get used to the band, and after that, he wasn’t bothered by it at all. And, most importantly, it worked!”
