What muscle imbalance can mean with a spinal curve such as scoliosis

In a balanced spine, muscles on both sides of the body work together to maintain posture and support movement. With a spinal curve such as scoliosis, muscles may work differently from one side to the other. For example:

  • overstretched muscles: on the outer side of the curve (the convex side), muscles may be held in a longer position and can become less efficient over time.
  • tightened muscles: on the inner side of the curve (the concave side), muscles may shorten and feel tight.

This can contribute to:

  • postural conditions: Uneven shoulders or hips.
  • pain or discomfort: Due to uneven muscle strain or fatigue
  • reduced mobility: Limited range of motion in the spine.

Addressing muscle imbalance

We provide non-surgical care for people with scoliosis, including bespoke bracing and collaborative physiotherapy input.

Bespoke bracing

Our LOC Scoliosis Brace is designed to create correction while you’re wearing it (known as in-brace correction) and help you feel more supported in day-to-day movement.

  • correct spinal curvature: By applying gentle pressure to guide the spine into a more natural position.
  • promote muscle balance: By realigning the spine, muscles can work more symmetrically.
  • enhance comfort: Lightweight and low-profile design ensures ease of wear.

Our internal audit data shows an average in-brace correction of approximately 78% when the brace is worn as prescribed. Results vary depending on factors such as curve type, flexibility, and wear time.

Physiotherapy and exercises

Alongside bracing, targeted exercises can:

  • strengthen weak muscles, especially on the convex side.
  • stretch tight muscles, particularly on the concave side.
  • improve posture, encourage a more balanced stance

Our team collaborates with physiotherapists to develop personalised exercise plans.

Regular assessments

Monitoring progress is crucial. We offer:

  • 3D scanning: for precise brace fitting and adjustments.
  • ongoing reviews: to check comfort, fit, and whether your plan is still working well.

Taking the next step

If you’ve been diagnosed with scoliosis, or you’re concerned about ongoing discomfort or posture changes, we’re here to help. Book a free online orthotic consultation to discuss your needs and explore bracing treatment.

A lightweight, custom 3D scoliosis brace designed to optimise in-brace correction

A bespoke brace can help reduce the risk of progression during growth and support curve management as part of a wider care plan. Our brace works by gently guiding your spine into a more corrective in-brace position, with follow-up and adjustments to support fit and comfort.

“LOC has been fantastic, friendly, understanding. Anna did not pull any punches about the wearing regime and gave us all the information we needed. Polly was in her brace for less than two years. LOC has provided a really incredible service.”
