Patient Information

When you have made an appointment at one of our clinics, you will be sent confirmation by one of our admin staff. The letter will confirm date, time and location of clinic that you are attending, plus the name of the specialist clinician that you are seeing.

The following information relates to what you should bring to the first appointment.

First Appointment - Orthotics (child)

Please bring with you a selection of your child’s current footwear and any orthotics/insoles that he/she may already be using, or have used in the past.

Please bring a pair of shorts for your child to change into if your child is coming for lower limb/knee assessments/biomechanical assessments. Also, please bring with you any x-rays or any other relevant information or correspondence that you feel maybe be important or useful for the consultation.

First Appointment - positional plagiocephaly

The initial consultation is free and there is no obligation to proceed.

The initial assessment consists of taking a clinical history, head measurements and assessing severity, and discussing different treatment options, depending on your child’s age and head shape severity.  Your child’s neck will also be assessed for any neck involvement.  Should there be any tightness, appropriate exercises and stretches will be discussed and demonstrated.  It is recommended that you bring your child’s red book so that we can track head circumference to date.

If treatment is recommended, and you wish to proceed with a LOCband, a cranial scan will be taken of your baby’s head using the Artec 3D Scanner.  The scanner captures your baby’s head shape at a rate of 15 frames per second. The overlap of the adjacent frames enables automatic alignment to instantly reconstruct a 3D computer model. The 3D image allows us to manufacture the cranial remoulding orthosis, and, also, to compare your baby’s head shape before and after treatment.

The LOCband is custom made exclusively for your child to the specific instructions of the prescribing clinician.  It is manufactured in the UK to strict standards and guidelines.

The band is fitted approximately two weeks after the scan, and any necessary modifications are completed at the fitting appointment.  This will take a minimum of one hour.

Following the initial fitting of the LOCband, treatment will be monitored after the first week’s use to ensure that all is proceeding well, and to make any modifications, if required. Subsequent review appointments will be arranged at two to four weekly intervals, depending on your baby’s age and severity of their plagiocephaly or brachycephaly to monitor head growth and correction during the course of the treatment.

If you formally agree, photographs are taken before and after treatment. The course of treatment usually lasts for three to six months, depending on your baby’s age and severity of the plagiocephaly or brachycephaly present.

First Appointment - Pectus Deformities (child)

The initial consultation is free and there is no obligation to proceed.

Our clinical specialist will assess your child’s chest deformity and his/her suitability for the treatment. He/she will be required to remove all clothing from their torso to allow a full examination. With your permission, pictures and scans of his/her chest area and ribs will be taken to document the deformity.

If it is established that your child is suitable for treatment, and you agree that treatment should begin, we would need to make appointments for a scan and subsequent fitting. Each appointment will be for an hour. Your child would then need to attend our clinic regularly for reviews and physiotherapy.

We have already built up a case load of overseas patients from as far away as Melbourne. Therefore, we can arrange the reviews so they are convenient for you, and even use Skype for periodical check-ups. We would like to see you as much as possible initially but we will try to work around appointments that are convenient for you.
