Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
The KAFO is an entire leg orthosis that spans the the knee, ankle and foot.It is prescribed to assist the muscles of the leg.The most common causes of muscle weakness are polio, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury.
Until recently the only KAFO that was available was fixed with a locking knee joint.
This provides stability to the knee but can lead to muscle atrophy. Now there are what is termed Free Walk versions available which can automatically lock and unlock at the right time in the gait cycle. This allows a more natural gait while ensuring that leg muscles are also stil being used.
Our specialist clinician will discuss with you which solution is best for both your specific condition and your personal needs and preference.
