Walk About Orthosis for Paraplegia
The first objective of the Walk About Orthosis is to allow the patient to stand in an upright position while second is to help the patient to move independently only with the additional aid of crutches. It is used to aid patients with long term conditions like spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis and other forms of degenerative neuromuscular disorders.
The benefit to the patient is both physical and psychological. Because the Walk About Orthosis is hinged under the pelvis, the centre of continuity extends to the hips. This allows the patient to use all of the upper parts of the body that are not paralysed.
