Spinal Orthotics

LOC has extensive experience in spinal conditions requiring Orthotic intervention such as scoliosis and spinal fractures. We treat both adults and children.

We have full casting facilities for bespoke spinal jackets.

The workshop facilities on site allow us to problem solve and adjust spinal braces quickly and efficiently. The bespoke devices are made locally by experienced manufacturers to facilitate quick delivery times and reliable results.

LOC has extensive experience in providing Orthoses for adults and children. We can give advice and fit bespoke Orthotics to individuals for many types of lower limb problems, such as; drop foot, stroke, Cerebral Palsy, spinal injury and other conditions. We have excellent links with paediatric and adult Neuro-physiotherapists who can compliment Orthotic treatment as we believe in a strong multidisciplinary approach to healthcare.

We pride ourselves in using some of the most advanced Orthotic designs and are continually updating ourselves in current practice to allow us to provide our clients with the most functional and fit for purpose Orthoses possible.

Following a comprehensive assessment of the client's requirements, measurements or a cast is taken. Conventional, cosmetic and carbon fibre Orthoses are manufactured by a local company which allows excellent communication and quick turn around times.

LOC has workshop facilities that allow fittings and adjustments to be carried out quickly and while the client waits.

The Silicone Ankle Foot Orthosis (SAFO)

The SAFO is a flexible silicone device that envelopes the foot to prevent foot drop during walking. It has been successfully used in the treatment of clients with: Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Popliteal and Sciatic nerve injuries, incomplete spinal injuries, Polio, children with Low tone Cerebral Palsy. The SAFO has had excellent results in the treatment of gait problems associated with CMT (Charcot Marie Tooth) and other Peripiheral Motor Neuropathy diseases.

Each SAFO is individually made to a plaster cast model of the patient's foot to ensure the best possible fit. The Orthosis can then be manufactured with the choice of either one or three straps and a single or full colour skin match. The device can be worn with or without socks in a normal shoe. The silicone is non-permeable; therefore it can be used in the shower or while swimming.

The SAFO comes in two styles: The SAFO 1 is the full silicone model which has a wider choice of skin tones and full silicone strapping. The SAFO Walk is a lower priced model and has a limited number of skin tones availiable and uses simpler plain velcro strapping. Both models have the same function and they are both highly effective.
