Plagiocephaly Awareness Day

04-April-2017

It’s Plagiocephaly Awareness Day!

This little known, but very common condition, also known as ‘flat head syndrome’, affectshalf of all babies under the age of one. It’s characterised by the back or side of a baby’s head appearing flattened and can also involve a bulging forehead, fullness of the cheek, or ear misalignment on the same side as the flattening.

Treating plagiocephaly is one of our specialisms and we have helped correct head shape in many babies using our LOCband treatment, otherwise known as cranial remoulding therapy.

Today, we’re sharing five stories from parents who came to us looking for help. We hope that these testimonials will help to spread awareness about the condition, the options available to help treat it and what you can expect from us if you would like to find out more.

Kelli’s Story

“LOC are amazing. We are very, very grateful to them for changing our daughter’s life. Five years ago she wore her LOCband for 10 months. The shape of her head changed dramatically. She had severe plagiocephaly and brachycephaly, caused by torticollis. Rachael from the Ross-on-Wye clinic was amazing. We are forever grateful for their help. The doctors tried to fob me off initially, but I had to go with my gut instinct that there was a problem. Would thoroughly recommend LOCband.”

Alison’s Story

“Our daughter had torticollis and plagiocephaly. Thanks to a LOCband from Bristol she was able to roll her head and do her physio exercises and now there is no evidence of either. Best thing we ever did despite the frown from the physio and tut from the GP!

“She had such a point to the back of her head and due to her neck she wasn't physically able to turn her head herself. The LOCband gave her a smooth surface to be able to help with the exercises as well as changing the shape of her head. It was truly amazing to see the results and so quickly and she wasn't bothered at all by it.

“I have nothing but praise for the team and the LOCband. Her head was so pointy she couldn’t roll her head from one side to the other. The helmet gave her a smooth surface to do this. Best thing we ever did, thank you.”

Hayley’s Story

“My son’s head circumference grew by 8% in six months. He was 12 months old when we started, as it took me six months to convince my husband! We were absolutely delighted with the results and would thoroughly recommend a LOCband, if you are in any doubt whatsoever. I didn't want to look back and wished we had done it sooner! Our son didn't complain about wearing it. They are comfortable and accurately measured and adjusted for each growth section. The service is amazing and the clinician was very informative and encouraging. Thank you to all your amazing team for our perfect results! Our son now has a perfect shaped head.”

Jamie’s Story

“Just tidying through a load of old papers and found the business card given to me by Saeed Hamid, operations director when we met him at the offices in Kingston. We had deliberated for some time about taking our son to have his head checked, as it had been really flat on one side, but after taking him to physiotherapy once a week it had improved greatly, but was still noticeable. We were nervous that we would be sold a helmet even if our son didn't need one. The reality was that, on arrival, we were welcomed in and made to feel very comfortable. Some measurements were taken and Saeed Hamid then explained the ranges that they look for with the measurement results and that our son fell in a range that they didn't consider to require a helmet and, therefore, he recommended us not to buy one. We, therefore, left feeling relieved that we had looked down this route and were extremely impressed by the professional approach taken. I'd highly recommend anyone to take their child here if they have concerns as we were definitely treated fairly!”

Claire’s Story

“Thank you to Sally Hews at the Kingston clinic for all your hard work and support with our daughter Jessica's LOCband. Jessica's asymmetry reduced from 19mm to 3mm (1.3mm on scan!) during four months of treatment. I would highly recommend this for any parent who is unsure about what to do about their child's plagiocephaly. It was the best thing we could have done for our daughter and are so thrilled with the results that were even better than originally predicted.”

Remember that your first initial plagiocephaly assessment is FREE and that you can upload photos of your baby’s head to our Flat Head Diagnosis Form and a clinician will respond to you within 24 hours.
